Dear Chairwoman Lee and Ranking Member Rogers,
My name is Zo Tum Hmung, Executive Director of the Chin Association of Maryland (CAM), a non-profit organization that advocates for religious freedom and human rights in Burma. I am writing to request the inclusion of specific language related to Burma in the final text of the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2023.
- Explicit commitment of new funding for FY 2023 that will number no less than the FY 2022 amount of $136,127,000 for Burma.
- Language that specifies the pursuit of religious freedom as an intended use of funding.
- Inclusion of Burma’s ethnic states and Sagaing Region as areas of deep humanitarian concern with a high number of internally displaced persons and great humanitarian need.
- Explicit support for cross-border assistance to Burma via India as well as Thailand.
Please find CAM’s full recommendations in the attached document. Thank you for the Committee’s work to support Burma’s pro-democracy organizations and ensure accountability for the Burmese military.
Sincerely,
Zo Tum Hmung
CAM Executive Director
